My EDM 310 Blog Assignments are Now Complete

It was nice having you all in the class. For those that sit by me, thanks for the help throughout the semester.

Last Post

I have learned a lot of things in this class this year. I started this class thinking I knew how to do stuff on the computer, but after a little while in the class I relized I didn't. I learned how to work on the google docs which I had never heard of until this class. I learned how to put pictures in the correct way, that way I would be able to move them around when I wanted. I had never even thought about putting in a hyperlink in a paper until I was taught how to do it in this class. Coming into this class I had a little knowledge on the excel, but I really did not know that much about it. I leared how to put all the formula's in so that it would make it a lot easier on me filling out each cell. I can't say ther is anything else that I would have wanted to learn, because Mr.Wakeman pretty much taught all the important things. Overall I have learned a lot of things the class with Mr. Wakeman and I am sure I will need some of this information in the future with my career.

iTune summaries "Edible Schoolyard" and "A Night in the Global Village"

Students at Martin Luther King Junior High in Berkley, CA plant, harvest, cook and eat is their edible classroom. Founded by a restaurant owner who was trying to find ways to improve school lunch programs, this concept is like non other. Students who do not excel in academics, gain pretige in this hands-on classroom. Here they teach basics that they do not learn at home along with social studies, math, science, and life. Kids are captivated by this experience. Teachers are trained to make the garden the center of teaching and to include all areas of learning in their experiences.

Students of the Rocky Mountain School in Denver, CO, participate in a night that is part National Geographic and part survivor. They travel to Heifer Ranch in Perryville, AK where they are put into different cultures to walk in somebody else's shoes for a night. They experience the hunger, poverty, living conditions, sanitation (or lack of), and lack of essentials needs for the night. Students are divided into a group with one adult and form a family. One member of the family is fitted with a device to appear pregnant and has to lose the use of one arm. The countries they are divided into are Guatemale, Thailand, Zambia and a refugee camp. In the refugee camp, they have no supplies, and they cannot speak the language of any other countries. All other students are equiped with some things, but not everything they need. They must trade and work with the other countries to get all of their essentials.

Students are taken out of their comfort zone and must cooperate and work together to make it through the night. The next morning they meet together and perform skits to show their experiences.

These are great tools to be used as a teacher. They take the students out of the classroom and make learning fun. This is turn makes students want to learn as they actually experience and have hands on work in all areas.

I think more schools should be able to do this. However, most schools are unable to afford such experiences. The podcasts make it possible for all students to at least have some experience of such things.

iTunes University

Apple iTunes has a section of their store called iTunes U which features free audio and video download dozens of universitied across the US and around the world. Some of these universities include Stanford, Duke, MIT, Arizona State and more. Some of the areas to learn about are following: Arts and Entertainment, Biography, Business, Education and Professional, History, Langages, Literature, Philosophy, Politics, Religion and Spirituality, Science, Self Development, Social Sciences, Sports and Hobbies, Technology, and Travel.

At Stanford University, hour long radio series discuss philosophical topics with contemporary philosophers. Also, authors discuss their books and businessmen discuss economic and political matters.

At some schools, IT professionals can help produce and distribute all kinds of multimedia content on iTunes. Once these classroom presentations and lectures have been captured and published, students can download them from iTunes. Then they can transfer them to iPod or iPhone and take it all with them. Anywhere becomes the classroom - students can learn literally anywhere

I-pod use

In 2004, Duke University partnered with Apple Computers and gave 1650 entering Freshman an iPod at no cost. Almost all of the uses were for academics. Some of the ways they were used were: Students downloaded a specially created calendar of the athletic events of campus; alarm clock; the row team downloaded information to help them with practice; loaded emergency numbers into them; backed up their personal computers to transport large files; posted recordings of speakers who came to campus; record class lectures; generated vocabulary flashcards and picture flashcards for anatomy class.

Some teachers use iPods to teach and enhance their class with music, poetry, movies, and media clips (English). It allows teachers to present information for three different learning styles - auditory, visual, and reading - all at once. Some math teachers have students listen to things such as math facts, memory rhymes, and songs. This allows a student to personalize math facts.

Dr. Christie's Site

Dr. Christie's site is an all-inclusive site that can be used by a teacher in any area. It is useful to the teacher in their planning and to the student in their learning. The extensive resources, links, and examples are given to be a tool in learning and utilizing how to efficiently and effectively use technology in the classroom and out of the classroom.

At the site, one will find classes, workshops, GPS information, how to search and use the internet, web design, and many other areas. As a teacher, the drop down selections provide a wealth of information, podcasts, and powerpoints that explain things like constructivism, how to write IEPs, and other valuable information.

Some specifice information provided are digital media and photography, electronic portfolios, emerging technologies, instant messaging, internet safety, online researching, and web development. These offer students many opportunities to enhance their learning and understand how new technology can be used in the classroom. It explains the advantages of internet learning and the disadvantage and dangers of internet use. It gives effective ways teachers can incorporate these tools in their classrooms.

Today's youth are growing up in a world unlike any other. There are so many things at their fingertips that can be a great advantage in the classroom if used in the proper way. This site enables a teacher to teach in ways that the generation of technology users and electronic game users can learn and understand.

WIKIPEDIA

To me wikipedia is not a useful search tool. I do not think you can trust any information on it. Anybody could go change the information to make it look good or make something look bad. If a company saw something that made them look bad, they could go in and change it to make them look good, but if somebody wanted to make a company look bad, they could go in and write something that was not true.

However, with Virgil Griffith developing the "Wiki Scanner" all that is libal to change. His scanner allows people to see the IP address to see where it was written from. Before the scanner someone could type something up and postt their name with what they said, or they could remain anonymous. It would put a stop to some of the things that were being said about big companys and important people.
